a brief personal rant/vent… (i apologize in advance)
We’re used to surrounding ourselves with people we mostly share similar values and opinions with in our personal lives… we choose our friends, who we of course disagree with at times, but find mutual respect in our disagreements. We don’t get to choose our family members, or people we work with, and contrasting values and morals inevitably surface. I’m nineteen, and consequently don’t have many options in terms of work. This summer I’m working an $8/hour (plus gratefully accepted tips) job at a local ice cream and frozen yogurt joint. It’s fine and fun at times, but my co-workers and I are very different. One guy has crossed a lot of respectful co-worker boundaries with hitting on me, asking me out several times after kind, clear denials, etc… Not a big deal, but slightly inappropriate in my eyes, especially given our age difference. Anyway, after a couple months there I’ve accumulated some frustrations. I’m someone who cares about people and will respect someone simply because they are a person and therefore deserve respect. I don’t just fight for what I see best for my own life, but for the rights I feel people in general deserve. I’m empathetic, kind, and respectful, apparently to a fault. My co-workers call me a humanitarian and a humanist, said in a derogatory way. I’ve been a vegetarian for five years, and they make fun of me for it and say that it’s not a problem because they’ll eat three animals for every one that I ‘save.’ They say Americans are stupid because they’ll start crying over a sick puppy but walk right past a dying human on the street. They think it’s funny that I bring a reusable water bottle to work each day and fill it with tap water. (Gross! Tap water in New York?! I drank it in South Africa and was fine.) Each time they retrieve a fresh Poland Spring bottle, tossing an empty one in the trash (note: not recycling) they say, laughing, “Oh, you just love seeing that waste pile up, don’t you?” They say global warming and the overall condition of Earth doesn’t matter since we’ll be dead and gone long before it adds up to any kind of destruction that will directly impact us; so it doesn’t really matter. They call me a hippie. Sometimes in lieu of my name. That pisses me off. But I have a pretty thick skin. What really bothers me is the sexist shit. They call me naive because I believe I can be friends with a straight male. (“No, there is no such thing as friendship between a straight man and woman, unless the chick is ugly, or fat. As attractive as you are, guys will always want more. You really think your straight friends are actually your friends? Hahahahhahahha…”) Today, they were telling me about views expressed by my sixteen-year-old co-worker: “She calls herself an anti-feminist. She values role-playing—women are supposed to cook and clean, while men bring home the bacon, like it’s supposed to be. The woman makes sure her husband never goes hungry. He’s the dominant one, she’s subordinate. I LOVE IT!” I was dumbfounded. I work for these people, so I often maintain a straight face and nod along, but I had a horrible headache this afternoon and couldn’t contain my disgust and anger. How can a woman view herself this way? Have so little respect for herself and everyone of her own sex? Be so oblivious to the enormous strides made by women before her in their fight for equality? How, as a woman, can you proudly label yourself an anti-feminist?!
Just another complaint….
I’m quite sick of Planned Parenthood and things of the like being closed, thanks to some nasty republican bullshit. I drove by one yesterday, all closed up, ready for some other failed business attempt. This just promotes lack of education and lack of choice for women who can’t afford another option. I guess nobody gives a shit about overpopulation. So, just another fuck you to republicans.

Hollande….
France has a new president. Finally, Sarkozy is out. France again is under a socialist president for the first time for over 20 years. I hope he can pull France up. But France is beginning to think capitalism would be a good idea. I say heeeellll no, and thank god a socialist is in power. Let’s hope he doesn’t make the French fall asleep… |
